Play First – Learn Why Later
Why Do Our Students Stay Interested?
Most schools start with talking – spending time on theory before you ever play a note or a real song. We lead with the music. If you play more, you progress faster. When you can make music & play from day one, you won’t want to put the guitar down. Playing is Practicing – just more fun.
Our Solution: We teach you to play during your very first lesson. We get you hooked on the sound first. The theory comes later – once you’re already jamming to your favorite songs.
Meet Paul & Brad
Paul started playing guitar at age 35 & that decision has been life-changing. Bradley grew up in a house filled with live music and musicians coming over to jam with Paul. Now, we jam together and it’s a gift that we will always cherish. Playing Music Together.
Paul decided he wanted to learn how to play piano/keys on 12/31/1999 at the age of 32. He went for formal lessons but it wasn’t suited to his learning style nor his type of music. He was a booking agent for reggae bands in
Chicago and he learned from the leader of the band. Other keyboardists & friends helped teach him their songs and about 6 months later, he was on stage playing keys for a top band in Chicago because the keyboard player
was late. He sweated through 3 songs before the keyboardist showed up and took over.
27 years later, Paul is still working with that band and played over 50 shows with them as a keyboardist. Paul then started learning guitar, drums and bass a few years later but stuck with guitar.
Again, Paul took formal guitar lessons and it wasn’t working. He found the perfect teacher, a gigging musician that understood the goal; teach him how to play music he loves. He then showed Paul how to play by ear and start
soloing with some very simple tricks. That’s what hooked Paul – being able to “solo” over any song he heard. Being able to figure out the chords based on math and simple tricks.
That’s what he’s going to teach you. How to love to play because playing is practicing.
Paul Cox
Teacher – Coach – Agent – Musician
Brad will be a Senior at University of North Florida majoring in Music Production with a minor in Music Performance. He graduated from Venice High and his band AUX was the Featured Act for the Senior Finale. He has been
in 3 Bands, recorded 2 albums and also teaches guitar in Jacksonville during the school year.
He is great with kids and knows how to keep them interested in playing the guitar. Brad has always been interested in music growing up around it. What got him hooked was a PS3 game called Rocksmith. He loved playing it because
you use your own guitar and it teaches all kinds of useful guitar techniques – but mostly, it kept Brad playing guitar and moving forward.
Eventually, Brad would jump in for jams at the house and kept learning from Paul, the internet and then music teachers and joining band at Venice High School.
If you need advice on guitars, amps, gear and recording software, Brad loves to talk about gear. He’s a purist and loves his tube amp and his 98′ Gibson Les Paul. If you have recording ambitions, he can help point you in
the right direction as well.
